Causes Of Vertigo – Vertigo Symptoms

Monday, August 31st, 2009

This article is written from a layman’s’ perspective. Always check with your doctor with any vertigo symptoms (dizziness).

The first time I experienced Vertigo symptoms was right after I had a nasty bout with bronchitis. I had already missed one week of work because of it. On the day I planned on returning to work; I got up when my alarm went off and promptly hit the floor.

I didn’t fall to the floor because my legs were weak. I didn’t even feel “bad”. But I was as dizzy as you could get. Scared out of my wits – I’d never experienced any thing like this before in my life – I crawled my way to the living room and climbed into a chair. The dizziness remained. I made coffee, thinking the Vertigo symptoms would go away. They didn’t and I decided to go to the emergency room.

At the emergency room, (as visions of brain tumors and the like presented themselves in my mind) the doctor seemed quite confident as to what my problem was. He asked me a series of questions, ran some tests, did some blood work and gave me some Antivert. He concluded that because of the Bronchitis, I had gotten the Vertigo, and that this was common. Vertigo is also common in the elderly – and it’s usually chronic.

He sent me home with my prescription of Antivert. I was out of work for another week, basically chained to my couch or bed. I couldn’t do anything else. I could not sit in front of my computer, or watch TV – everything had a tendency to bounce around. I was miserable. The Antivert that was prescribed to me made me incredibly drowsy and I slept a lot. After 3 days, I felt better and not quite so dizzy, but I still was unable to drive at this point, and it took another few days to feel normal.

The best way for me to describe my Vertigo symptoms is this. Don’t laugh. It’s exactly how I felt.

Have you ever gotten so drunk to the point to where you got the spins? The room starts spinning and twirling taking you for the ride. It only goes away when you lay down and lay completely still. Only with Vertigo symptoms, it doesn’t go away.

My mother is prone to Vertigo, she usually gets the Transderm Scop motion sickness patch. She says it doesn’t make her drowsy and vertigo symptoms go away within 24 hours. I’ve never tried the patch, I’ve always taken Antivert, prescribed by a doctor or you can also buy generic Antivert over the counter at any drugstore. Look for Meclizine on the box, or the brand Bonine.

My understanding of one of the causes of Vertigo is an imbalance of the crystals in the ear, which make sense, at least for me since I only get Vertigo after I’ve been sick with Bronchitis.

If you are experiencing vertigo symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Is There Going To Be An Asian Flu Pandemic?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

The last Asian flu pandemic occurred in 1957. It is estimated that between 1 million people and 4 million people were killed by the virus.

Fast forward to October 2004 when an American lab sent out stored samples of the deadly strain of Asian flu to different labs all over the world. By some kind of administrative error some 3,700 samples of the 1957 Asian flu virus were sent out to labs around the world. The US scrambled to fix this terrible error but because the labs had expected to receive a much more normal sample of flu virus for testing they did not treat the sample with the care that the strain they received deserved. It is unlikely that all the samples were retrieved.

How could this have happened?

The College of American Pathologists, from time to time, sends out different viruses to labs worldwide. They do this so that these labs can test to see how well their vaccines are coping with the expected influenza strains. In order to make the testing accurate, the labs are not told what strain of virus they are going to receive. Only the CAP knows what they are sending out to the testing labs. The College of American Pathologists thought that they were sending out a regular old Influenza A virus but instead they sent out one of the most deadly viruses in human history: the Asian flu.

If this Asian flu had escaped into the population the consequences would have been very serious. Nobody born since 1968 would have any immunity to the virus, the effects would likely be at least as bad as they were in 1957 when people had had the chance to build up some immunity from the virus’ ancestors.

The incident was caused by an administrative error although the details have yet to be made public. How could 3,700 samples of Asian flu be put out into the world by accident? Samples were sent to Asia, the Middle East, North and South America as well as Europe. It only took one lab worker to have an accident, or for a lab to dispose of the samples incorrectly and the genie would have been out of the bottle.

The most chilling aspect of the issue was that because of the lack of knowledge at the receiving labs, they did not take the care that they should have. Asian flu should be kept in extreme containment. Because the kits normally contain a relatively harmless strain of flu, they do not receive great security.

This incident tends to put the current avian (bird) flu scare into perspective. H5N1 (avian) flu does not spread from human to human, only from birds to humans or other animals. As such, whilst it is sensible to be concerned about the bird flu issue, the real threat comes from the kind of man-made mistake of October 2004 when a deadly infectious disease was carelessly handled. This kind of error can happen at any time and would have devatating consequences. Bird flu is unlikely to ever make the jump across species and even now, vaccines are almost ready to protect humans against the H5N1 flu virus.

Childhood Obesity

OUR DIETS TODAY

Our diets today consist of entirely too much processed, high fat, high sodium food. The nutrients and fiber our bodies need to stay healthy are not found in most of the food we purchase at restaurant chains, drive-through restaurants, take out food, and processed or pre-cooked meals. The problem is, we are a nation of individuals in a hurry, and do not have the time, nor take the time, to eat healthy. We are raising our children on high fat, high salt, fast – foods today. Our children will no have an idea of what a healthy diet is if we do not model it for them.

The second leading cause of chronic health conditions today is obesity. Why? Because, obesity leads to many other chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. At first, it may seem that a healthy, balanced diet is boring and takes too much time out of our day. If we want to live a long, healthy life, however, a few minutes out of our day will save years of life yet to come.

CHILDHOOD OBSEITY

Obesity rates in children have doubled since 1980.Children are experiencing diseases usually only adults experience, diabetes and high blood pressure. Did you know? Obesity is defined by many practitioners as 20% above normal weight. If your child should weigh around 100 pounds to be in the healthy range and he or she ways 120 pounds, this is considered to be obese.

Other practitioners use BMI (body mass index) to determine whether a child is obese. Today’s children are used to consuming high fat, high salt diets, ordering what they feel like at every meal, diets without fruits and vegetables, and sodas instead of milk or water. The cost to our children is arteries starting to show early signs of heart disease in the second decade of their life. Children age two and older need to cut back on saturated and trans- fat.

WHAT SHOULD OUR CHILDREN EAT?

Low fat lunchmeat, low fat cheese, regular (natural) peanut butter-it is the good fat with zero grams of trans- fat. Children should eat three or more colors at every meal-choose red, green and orange fruits and veggies, with half of the meal being fruit and veggies. Avoid pre-packaged meals and talk about food choices with your children so they understand what healthy eating is. Also avoid eating out at most meals.

The norm that is being served to kids at restaurants nowadays is fried chicken fingers, greasy cheeseburgers, and fatty pizza. Fries are served with almost every meal served to children nowadays. In fact at half of the restaurant chains french fries were the only side dish on the menu. The extras offered are: fatty biscuits, corn bread, dessert, soda, and half the restaurants serve free re-fills on only sodas-not milk. What should be ordered at restaurants for children are baked or grilled entrees, with salad and fruit. An occasional treat is fine, but a steady diet of how fat-high sugar-high salt food is the worst a child can have.

What is the difference between a vision screening and a complete eye exam?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Vision screenings are general eye tests that are meant to help identify people who are at risk for vision problems. These are the brief vision tests performed by the school nurse, the pediatrician or screeners in the workplace.

The eye test that you take when you get your driver’s license renewed is another example of a vision screening.

Comprehensive eye examination is performed by an eye doctor and will involve careful testing of all aspects of your vision. Based upon the results of your exam, the eye doctor will then recommend a treatment plan for your individual needs. Remember, only an eye doctor can provide a comprehensive eye exam — most family physicians and pediatricians are not fully trained to do this, and studies have shown that they can miss important vision problems that require treatment.

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Lemons, they are one of the best fruits to use if you are sick or have asthma. Learn why and how you need to use them if you have asthma

Most people shy away from lemons because they are sour. Or, they make lemon juice and then kill their beneficial effects by adding sugar. Well, here is what your are missing if you don’t drink fresh natural lemon aid every morning.

For asthma, lemon juice is great because it,

It is antiseptic – kills germs that hide in your mucus
It destroys bad bacteria that lives in your mouth, stomach, and intestines
It helps to dissolve mucus so when you have a cold or cough you recover quicker. The combination of 8 oz of water and lemon greatly cuts into your thick mucus that builds up in your bronchial tubes.
Helps to cleanse your blood and clean blood makes your lung tisse healthier

Lemons are high in vitamin C and potassium. They also contain plenty of fiber and phytochemcials, which contain antioxidants many of which have not been studied.

Use only lemons that are yellow and don’t have any signs of green. You can store lemons in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and they will last for up to 5-6 days. To use these lemons bring them out and let them come to room temperature.

If you have a lot of lemons, you can squeeze the juice and freeze them in ice trays for later use.

If you have acid reflux or ulcers use lemons with caution and use your common sense to decide how much juice to drink. With acid reflux or ulcers use DGL or Mastic gum to clear the H..pyloric bacteria.

Lemons also tend to thin the blood so if you are on drugs that thin the blood, avoid using a lot of lemon juice.

When you have asthma, you can use 3-4 lemons daily. You can use up to ten lemons per day without much problem when you are trying to resolve a health issue. What you can do for asthma is make a thermos drink where you squeeze 4-5 lemons into 32 oz or less of distilled water and drink this juice all day long. Just remember to rinse out your mouth with fresh water after you drink the lemon juice.

10 Powerful Tips To Stop Smoking

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Whether you are using Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Hypnosis or just Cold Turkey, these strategies and hints are for aiding you to stop smoking and are sure to assist you in helping your neurology change and thus enable you to stop smoking with ease. It is up to you to ensure that you do these things to really enhance what you are doing, the more effort you put into these exercises, the easier it is to stop smoking for good.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 1.

Being a smoker is like cycling with stabilisers attached to the wheels, you can find it hard to be balanced without smoking. Now, when you cycle freely again, the natural balance returns.

When people smoke, more than half of what they breathe is fresh air – pulled through the cigarette right down into the lungs. So if you feel any cravings you can instantly overcome them by taking three deeper breaths. Imagine breathing from that space just below your belly button. Whenever you do this you put more oxygen into your bloodstream. This means you can use deep breaths to change the way you feel instantly and give you power over the way you feel and help you let go of those old cravings and thus making it easier to stop smoking.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 2

Next, think now of all the reasons you don’t like smoking, the reasons that it’s bad and the reasons you want to stop smoking. Write down the key words on a piece of paper. For example, you experience breathlessness, it’s dirty, filthy and your clothes smell, your friends and family are concerned and it’s expensive, unsociable and so on. Then, on the other side of the paper, write down all the reasons why you’ll feel good when you’ve succeeded in stopping. You’ll feel healthier, you’ll feel in control of your self, your senses are enhanced, your hair and clothes will smell fresher and so on. Whenever you need to, look at that piece of paper.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 3

Next, we are going to programme your mind to feel disgusted by cigarettes. I want you recall 4 times when you thought to yourself “I’ve gotta quit”, or that you felt disgusted about smoking. Maybe you just felt really unhealthy, or your doctor told you in a particular tone of voice ‘You’ve got to quit’ or somebody you know was badly affected by smoking. Take a moment now to come up with 4 different times that you felt that you have to quit or were disgusted by smoking.

Remember each of those times, one after another, as though they are happening now. I want you to keep going through those memories and make them as vivid as possible. The more vivid you make those memories, the easier it will be to stop smoking. See what you saw, hear what you heard and feel how you felt. I want you to take a few minutes now to keep going through those memories again and again, overlap each memory with the next until you are totally and utterly disgusted by cigarettes.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 4

Have a think to yourself about the consequences of you not stopping smoking now, if you just carry on and on. Imagine it, what will happen if you carry on smoking. What are the consequences? Imagine yourself in 6 months time, a years time, even 5 years time if you do not stop smoking now. Think of all the detrimental effects of not stopping right now and how a simple decision you make today can make such an impact on your future.

Next, imagine how much better is your life going to be when you stop smoking. Really imagine it’s months from now and you successfully stopped. Smoking is a thing of the past, something you used to do. Keep that feeling with you and imagine having it tomorrow, and for the rest of next week. In your mind, imagine stepping in to that non-smoking version of you and feel how it feels to be a non-smoker.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 5

Also, your mind is very sensitive to associations, so it’s very important that you have a clear out and remove all tobacco products from your environment. Move some of the furniture in your house and at work. Smokers are accustomed to smoking in certain situations. So, for example, if you used to smoke on the telephone at work move the phone to the other side of the desk. Throw away ashtrays, old lighters and anything that you used to associate with smoking. Make your environment conducive to stopping smoking.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 6

Smokers sometimes use their habit to give themselves little breaks during the day. Taking a break is good for you, so carry on taking that time off – but do something different. Walk round the block, have a cup of tea or drink of water, or do some of the techniques on this programme. In fact, if possible drink a lot of fruit juice. When you stop smoking the body goes through a big change. The blood sugar levels tend to fall, the digestion is slowed down and your body starts to eject the tar and poisons that have accumulated. Fresh fruit juice contains fructose which restores your blood sugar levels, vitamin C which helps clear out impurities and high levels of water and fibre to keep your digestion going. Also try to eat fruit every day for at least two weeks after you have stopped.

Also when you stop, cut your caffeine intake by half. Nicotine breaks down caffeine so without nicotine a little coffee will have a big effect. Drink 8-10 glasses of water (ideally bottled) to help wash out your system.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 7

You were used to using cigarettes to signal to your body to release happy chemicals, so next we are going to programme some good feelings into your future. Allow yourself to fully remember now a time when you felt very deep ecstasy, pleasure or bliss, right now. Take a moment to recall it as vividly as possible. Remember that time – see what you saw, hear what you heard and feel how good you felt. Where abouts in your body were those feelings, imagine turning them up and spreading them through your body to make them more intense.

Keep going through the memory, as soon as it finishes, go through it again and again, all the time squeezing your thumb and finger together. In your mind, make those images big and bright, sounds loud and harmonious and feelings strong and intensified. We are making an associational link between the squeeze of your fingers and that good feeling.

Okay, stop and relax. Now if you have done that correctly when you squeeze your thumb and finger together you should feel that good feeling again. Go ahead do that now, squeeze thumb and finger and remember that good feeling.

Now we’re going to programme good feelings to happen automatically whenever you are in a situation where you used to smoke but now you stop smoking.

So, next I’d like you to squeeze your thumb and finger together, get that good feeling going and now imagine being in several situations where you would have smoked, but being there feeling great without a cigarette. See what you’ll see hear and take that good feeling into those situations without a need for a cigarette.

Imagine being in a situation where someone offers you a cigarette and you confidently say ‘No thanks, I don’t smoke’. And feel fantastic about it!

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 8

Get social support. Your commitment to stopping smoking for the rest of your life can be made much easier by talking about it to friends and family and letting them support you. They will congratulate you on doing so well too! You really did stop smoking.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 9

Be aware of making excuses for yourself. Some people talk themselves into smoking, especially if they encounter a stressful situation and in the past they used to deal with it by smoking. If those old thoughts pop into your head, shout the word “STOP” in your head, to stop the thoughts from progressing. Nicotine just stresses your body more and is like that itch that can never be properly scratched; the more you smoke, the more you have to. So say “STOP” and steer clear of old slippery slopes.

Powerful Stop Smoking Hint 10

Reward yourself. Congratulate yourself. Feel how good it feels to stop smoking and be a non-smoker. Treat yourself each time you get past a certain milestone; the first week or first month, the six month target. Let yourself know that you did something really special here.

Keep on using your brain, stretching it and helping your self, by running through these exercises time after time; you are sure to be able to make it easier and easier and successfully stop smoking for good.

Breaking Into a Vegetable Juicing Diet

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

So you have your new juicer and are ready to make all the vegetable juicing recipes you can. Before you buy lots of different vegetables to juice, you need to know some basics that will help you break into a vegetable juicing diet.

You must integrate vegetable juice into your diet with baby steps. Juicing allows you to absorb more nutrients because the vegetable juice is already removed for the pulp for your intestines to take them in. However, not all vegetable juice can be digested that easily, especially the green leafy vegetable juice that is very rich. It is better to use vegetables that are easy to consume first, such as celery, zucchini, beets, carrots, and cucumbers.

Use recipes that are based on a combination of these. After a while, when there are no issues with digestion, slowly add in some dark greens like broccoli, lettuce and spinach. Eventually, you should have no problems with almost all vegetables.

It is not a good idea stick with the same few vegetable juicing recipes that you enjoy. Try out juicing recipes that include vegetables you may not like. Reduce the amount it calls for if you need to and use other fruits and vegetables you like to mask the taste. That way, you won’t get too used to a narrow diet. Your body may have a difficult time adjusting to changes in your eating habits otherwise. You also insure that you are getting a many vitamins and minerals. I would suggest using your favorite juicing recipes every 3 days or so, and the other days to try new things.

Many people don’t like to deal with the taste of vegetable juice because it is may be too rich in nutrients and too bitter. If it is bitter, then sweeten it a little! Add some carrots and beets. Alternatively, you can use apples, grapes and other fruits to give it an enjoyable taste. If it’s too dense, dilute it with water.
