Effects of Bulimia – Health Complications

Monday, March 29th, 2010

There are many effects of bulimia and the health complications can be varied in each individual. Bulimia is normally characterized by behaviors of binging and purging.

Binging can be defined as a large consumption of food in a short time period, but the word “large” can mean different things for different people. Some consider a large amount of calories to be binging while others may think a regular portion of food at a mealtime may be too much. Others may consider a piece of cake and ice cream at a party to be a binge. As you can imagine, the word “large” is relative to what each person believes to be “too much food at one time.”

Characteristically, after binging, the person feels so guilty, so bad about themselves, over their action that they feel the need to get rid of all the food they just ingested. This is where the purging behavior starts.

Purging can be defined as the elimination of food/calories by means of vomiting or using laxatives. Different individuals will use one method or the other and some will combine methods. This is very individual to each person. Binging and purging can lead to serious health complications. These health complications may at times be severe and even life threatening. The type of purging used may determine the severity of those health complications.

A person’s normal body functions are disrupted by the behaviors characterized by bulimia. Some of the more common complications of bulimia affect your cardiovascular, digestive, and dental health. The potassium levels in your body fluids can also be affected by bulimia and may lead to drug and medication abuse.

Some of the cardiovascular problems caused are rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeats, chest pains, imbalances in electrolyte levels, breathing problems, and possibly even cardiac arrest. Bulimia may also lead to low blood pressure, lightheadedness, fainting, and dizzy episodes.

Some of the digestive problems caused are swelling and sores in the throat and mouth. You may rupture the lining of your esophagus or stomach. Long term use of laxatives may lead to drug dependence and adversely affect the normal bowel functions. Pancreatitis, peptic ulcers, bloating, and stomach pain may also be health complications resulting from bulimia.

The acid coming back up from your stomach through your throat and mouth can destroy your tooth enamel and thus lead to more tooth decay and cavities. Your teeth may become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and become crumbly or fall out. Intensive work on the teeth may be needed to get them back to the condition they were once in before bulimic activity was initiated.

Bulimia may also cause loss of or irregular menstruation, mood swings, depression, kidney and liver damage, possible hair loss, and anemia. As you can see, the effects of bulimia can be MANY and are varied from individual to individual.

Bottom line, if you or someone you know, has bulimia, please get the information you need to get treatment. The time to get healthy again is NOW, not later. Get help, please.

Monday, March 15th, 2010

If you have found out the reason behind tonsil stones or tonsillitis, it will become a lot easier for you to get rid of tonsil stones effectively. It is quite distressing to see that there is not much information available regarding this problem. Doctors get stuck in the dilemma of what is the reason behind this condition and how it can be cured. Instead, they opt for removing the whole tonsil to get rid of tonsil stones only. For several people, this option would sound insane. Once you have got to know what reasons are behind these stones occurrence, you would be able to cure them effectively.

To get rid of tonsiliths, it is essential for you to know the function of tonsil and what tonsil crypts are. Majority of the information available on the internet these days state that tonsil stones occur because of food particles which get stuck in tonsil crypts. Later on, bacteria attacks on them and these stones are formed. This whole concept is false as if you observe what tonsils are designed for and why it has tonsil crypts, all information will fall into pieces.

Tonsils are the part of lymphatic system and their job is to clean lymph fluid from unfamiliar cells and objects. This means that the function of tonsils is like a filter to take care body form viruses, bacteria and other harmful objects. During this cleaning procedure, a huge amount of waste material is generated which is required to be put in somewhere else. For this purpose, tonsil crypts come in to play. Tonsil crypts are sort of garbage can for tonsils. This waste will be transferred from your mouth to stomach and then out. Generally, in the healthy person, the quantity of waste material is not that much and it is in the form of fluid.

But when lymph fluid has huge amount of junk in it, the waste transform its color into white and becomes thick. If the quantity of junk is on the higher side, junk will be termed as tonsils which are quite hard to clean. The result of this process is the tonsil stones that produce uncomfortable conditions like strep throat or bad breath.

To get rid of tonsiliths, it is necessary to ensure that lymph fluid is not involved in producing good amount of junk. Having high quantity of junk will provide trouble to your tonsil stones.

How Acid Reflux Can Affect You

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Your digestive system does an amazing job for you, most of the time. However, there are instances when it can turn on you. If you eat too much or consume the wrong thing, it will talk to you. Often that will happen in the middle of the night. It will tell you that acid has splashed into your esophagus, from your stomach. This is called acid reflux. Your brain will receive pain signals and pass them on to you. You will feel burning in your chest. Your throat will burn. You may have a bitter taste in your mouth. Your stomach may hurt. You will be miserable. If this happens every now and then it is no big deal. If it occurs often, something serious may be happening. Here are some things to know.

It May Be More Complicated
One of the complications is GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD happens when reflux is frequent and more severe. The stomach valve does not work properly. It allows acid to reflux up into your throat at times. Frequent heartburn is a major symptom of GERD. Difficulty in swallowing and frequent coughing can also happen. Food may feel like it is stuck in the throat on occasion.

Why Does It Happen?
If you are pregnant or a smoke you have a greater chance of developing GERD. Obesity will increase your chances also.

In some cases there will be a hernia above the stomach. It causes acid to reflux up into the esophagus at times. They are known as hiatal hernias and are fairly common among the population. Most of the time, they do not cause serious problems. As you age, your chances of developing it get better.

More Serious Issues
Barrett’s esophagus can develop in some cases of long term GERD. It is caused by repeated invasion of acid into the esophagus. Esophagus cells change in order to protect themselves from the acid. Symptoms may be worse than those of GERD. In some cases they may not be as severe. Barrett’s esophagus can lead to ulcers and narrowing of the esophagus. In some cases, the narrowing may be severe. Cancer may also develop. Regular doctor treatment is vital. Only clinical testing can tell you if you have this condition.

Dealing With Reflux
If your problem is minor, over the counter antacid pills may be a good option. If you have GERD or worse conditions, you should see a doctor. There are prescription medicines available to you. Other options like surgery are not usually required. There are some things you can do to help. Sleep with your head raised. Eat smaller meals. Do not stuff yourself. Eating before bedtime is not recommended. Avoid bending over when possible. Do not wear tight fitting clothes.

Final Thoughts
Not all acid reflux should be a concern. There are steps you can take to feel better. If it is chronic, see a doctor. It could be indication of something severe. If it is severe, there are treatment options available to you.
